Councillor for Tourism states that visitors benefit city’s economy

  • Henrique Tello awarded prizes to the winners of the “Tower of Hercules” cocktail competition
  • Food and nature are the main attractions in the city, so bad weather has no effect on number of visitors
  • Taste me Marquee closes today after ten days of success - activities in the “Eat A Coruña” campaign to continue until next weekend

A Coruña, 24 April 2011 – Vice Mayor and Councillor for Tourism Henrique Tello awarded the prizes for the first Tower of Hercules Cocktail Competition to Café Nature and their Mojito de Mango, in the classical cocktail section, and to 981 for Amón in the creative section; Drowsy Duck and Porteño won the alcohol-free section.

The competition was one of the almost 200 activities in the “Eat A Coruña” campaign, which was most successful. In this regard, Henrique Tello pointed out that the hotel occupation rate was 75% and emphasised that despite the bad weather A Coruña is still very popular with tourists because what people mainly come in search of is food and nature.

“Tourism, from an economic point of view, is very transversal and affects many different kinds of businesses and people. Visitors spend money in small and medium sized businesses and this money stays here” said Henrique Tello, expressing his satisfaction at the number of tourists in the city over the holidays.

Even though one of the main attractions in April Food was the Taste me and the Cuisine Classes (with 3,000 visitors), which closes today, there are still special menus this week (Maria Pita and Tower of Hercules) at very special prices - 15 and 25 Euros respectively - in the best restaurants in the city.

Furthermore, next weekend there is another cooking workshop for children, where they will learn to make milkshakes with fruit. On Friday 29 and Saturday 30, for each 10 Euros spent at Elviña, San Agustín, Santa Lucía and Ramón Cabanillas markets, people will receive a voucher to take part in a draw for 10 tasting menes at Alborada and La Estación, both restaurants with a Michelin star.

The last street party will be held on Friday 29 April on A Estrela, like the previous ones on Troncoso and Barreira. For each drink bought at bars in the promotion from 20:30 onwards, a free tapa of cheese and empanada pie will be given.
